bang! not another story idea?!

So, here's what's happening.

The story I'm working on, Dance of the Twilight, is now somewhere in the vicinity of 3,600-plus words and I'm just getting to about half of the story. I wasn't able to work on it last week so it simmered a bit and when I had my first serious re-read of what I've written so far yesterday, I just had to revise it on the spot to integrate newer ideas for the story that I came up with last week, when I wasn't working on the story.

So, that's where I am right now -- about almost half-way through the story. It'll most likely end up some 10-thousand words but I hope to be able to trim it down if only for cohesiveness and smoothness. Right now, it's pretty much a jumble of ideas. The main storyline is there but there are lots of ideas floating around in it that it's ending up to be some sort of chopsuey story. On the final version, a lot of these ideas and scenes and what-have-you's will surely be chopped.

But what got me excited last night was this ...

This story I'm writing is actually a bit of an intro, or a prequel, to a much bigger story (how big? think epic) that I hope to one day write. I've got the gist of the big story outlined somewhere (yes, it is written down but as to where I can't ascertain at this time) and I've already listed (again somewhere) some ideas about people, races, culture, language -- stuff relating to world-building, mainly. So far, since this big story project was started last year, I believe, I've been adding bits and pieces to this particular fictional-world setting while fleeting from one personal project to another (just last month I was working on this alt-history fictional setting remember?).

Well, last night, while walking home from work, it hit me. Bang! Another story idea for this particular world-setting. And then it hit me again. Bang! Another story idea? I haven't even finished this short story I'm working on!

But by then my mind was already racing and the ideas just started popping in. It was like my mind would not or could not stop thinking about this story. If only there was an idea recorder readily available that could just suck up all the ideas that instantly came to mind I could've easily finished the story! By the time I came home, the basic story itself was written in my mind. What was next was to actually get it all down on virtual ink.

And how much of the new story did I actually get to write down last night? Only about 10%. Somehow, something gets lost in the translation when you finally try to transfer what seemed to be a great story in your mind into actual words on the flickering LCD screen.

Will still work on the new story idea though while I finish Dance of the Twilight.
