about sketch-a-day

I am now on Day 3 of a personal project cum endeavor cum practice which I nicked "Sketch-A-Day" or S-A-D. Not a very original title, I do agree, but it will do.

Why am I doing S-A-D?

Well, if you've read my previous post, you now know I am embarking on a new personal project and essentially trying to get back my skills as an illustrator. This S-A-D is my way of ensuring I keep myself on track for that future project and hopefully, in the next couple of months I'll be competent and confident enough to launch that personal project.

It's also practice for me. I haven't drawn as much in the past 10 years or so. The most extensive drawings I've done have been on the margins of notebooks, steno pads, scratch papers, and other surfaces -- mostly doodles and tidbits (and many of them just heads with large eyeballs and noses).

How am I doing S-A-D?

In between workloads at the office, I sneak in one or two (or ten) minutes of my time (ahems, taking the time off my supposed 15-minute coffee breaks or from my hour-long lunch breaks, of course) and with a sketch pad and drawing pencil, just doodling and sketching. No inking yet as that is not a skill I have tried before (although the comics I made in my youth were inked and lettered albeit with a fine point Pilot ballpen :P). But I got the tools handy when I get the itch to try inking (with pens that is, not yet with brushes).

The last three S-A-Ds have been character sketches -- drawing up the protagonists of my soon-to-launch (hopefully) webcomics. And I'm thinking not just one webcomic but two -- one, based on actual experience, and the other more super-fantastical in nature. Both webcomic ideas are however, as I see it now, comic strips that are supposed to evoke a smile or laugh (fingers-crossed here).

And to prep myself for S-A-D, webcomics and graphic artists' websites have been my staple for the last couple of weeks. Some of those I check out include:

Legend of Bill - discovered this last year and I'm a fan
Gerry Alanguilan - Sir Gerry is an idol for aspiring artists
Menage A 3 - proving sex and sexual situations can be funny

The Source, DC Comics' official blog is also great resource as the posts provide a lot of insight of what goes behind the making of comics and how they come out as great and magnificent as they are.

I'll be uploading images of my S-A-D progresses hopefully this weekend (which will be the time I'll be able to get the scanner up and running).
